JOSEPH’S BLESSINGS: The Lord now restores to Joseph far more than what he had lost when sold into slavery.

46. JOSEPH WAS THIRTY YEARS OLD: He was seventeen when he was sold into slavery, so he had endured thirteen years of captivity and enslavement.

49. UNTIL HE STOPPED COUNTING, FOR IT WAS IMMEASURABLE: This is how the Lord blesses those who obey Him, pouring out blessings in immeasurable abundance. “ ‘Try Me now in this,’ says the LORD of hosts, ‘if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it’ ” (Malachi 3:10).

ON: One of the four great Egyptian cities, also called Heliopolis, which was known as the chief city of the sun god, Ra. It was located approximately nineteen miles north of ancient Memphis.

51. MANASSEH: meaning “causing to forget.” The Lord blessed Joseph so abundantly that it was as if he had never suffered in the first place. Even his lost family had been restored to the extent that he forgot his grief.

52. EPHRAIM: meaning “double fruit.” Like Joseph, Job had also suffered tremendously, but the Lord rewarded his faithfulness with double what he had lost (see Job 42:10). Now he was rewarding Joseph the same way.

55. GO TO JOSEPH: Joseph’s authority remained intact, and after seven years Pharaoh still fully trusted his vizier. Joseph dispensed the food supplies by sale to Egyptians and others.

57. ALL COUNTRIES CAME TO JOSEPH: The use of hyperbole with the word all emphatically indicates the widespread ravaging impact of famine far beyond Egypt’s borders. She had indeed become the “breadbasket” of the ancient world.

THE FAMINE WAS SEVERE IN ALL LANDS: Pharaoh’s dream, prophesying a fourteen-year cycle of plenty and famine, was fulfilled completely.
